Sri Suravaram Pratapa Reddy ( 1896-1953) was among the greatest and versatile Telugu scholars born in present day Telangana region, Itikalapadu village of Mahabubnagar district on 28th May 1896.  He studied Sanskrit literature and grammar under the guidance of Vellala Sankarasastri. Later he finished his FA at Nizam College, Hyderabad. Then he obtained BA and BL degrees from Presidency College, Madras and became a lawyer for a short while.  While studying in Madras, he became hugely influenced by the national movement, and vowed to change the situation in nizam’s Hyderabad.

Sri Pratapa Reddy’s multi-faceted prodigious contributions in the field of social history, political activism, journalism and literature  are legendary, in the then Hyderabad during the Nizam tyrannical rule.  His seminal work `Andhrula Sanghika Charitra’ (Social History of Andhras) on the history of Telugu people, was first published in 1949 and has since gone through many editions, winning the prestigious Kendra Sahitya Academy award. Golkonda Kavula Sanchika , a collection of poems written by 350 Telangana poets brought out by Suravaram Pratap Reddy in 1942. Suravaram brought out this special issue of poems when poets from Seemandhra reportedly questioned the existence of Telugu poets in Hyderabad dominion.

His work Andhrula Saanghika Charitra is considered the best social history, which won the first award from central literature academy was printed again and again for 7 times and the same has been translated into Hindi by Yarlagadda Laxmi Prasad. S. Pratap Reddy represented the State assembly from Wanaparthy constituency in the district in 1953.
Sri Suravaram Pratap Reddy is known more for his active participation in and leadership of the social and cultural renaissance movement in Telangana during 1920-1948 period that defied the Nizam autocracy and worked for the liberation of the people from the horrible feudal cum monarchical dictatorship of the days which prejudiced and oppressed the majority community in the Nizam Hyderabad State and especially the Telugu people of Telangana.

Hyderabad: The 128th birth anniversary of Suravaram Pratap Reddy, an eminent Telugu literary figure and social reformer from the Palamuru region, was marked by a series of commemorative events. The day commenced with a garlanding ceremony at his statue on Tank Bund, attended by prominent leaders, including former Minister Singireddy Niranjan Reddy.

In his address, Singireddy Niranjan Reddy lauded Suravaram Pratap Reddy as a pivotal figure in Telangana's political and social renaissance. He highlighted Reddy's multifaceted contributions as a writer, orator, social reformer, editor, and poet. "Suravaram Pratap Reddy's legacy as a newspaper editor, researcher, scholar, and leader of movements is unparalleled. His relentless efforts in documenting the history and struggles of the locals are immortalised in his writings," said Singireddy.
