Emerson: The Mind on Fire
Visited Concord for a day on a recent trip to Boston & toured both the Orchard House and Emerson's home (and walked around Walden Pond). Had been expecting to enjoy & appreciate Louisa May Alcott's family home but the Emerson home and his friendship & support of the Concord literary folks caught my attention in a way that reading "Self-Reliance" in an American lit class long ago did not. I looked at books on Thoreau, Alcott, Margaret Fuller but somehow, he was the one I wanted to read about first.
Author concentrates on Emerson's intellectual life but there are biographical details in this also, of course. Emerson himself kept such extensive journals and notebooks on his reading & ideas that I am impressed with how much material the author himself must have had to read to be able to tell this story of how Emerson's philosophy & opinions developed over the decades.
