Started in 1909 in New York City, International Women’s Day has grown across the world as a way to respect the economic, political and social achievements of women. It was adopted by the United Nations in 1977 and this year’s theme is ‘Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030’.

Well-known in the area for her work on the BBC, Keeley grew up near Tetney and is the daughter of former professional footballer Terry Donovan. Born in 1983, she studied at Humberston School before gaining a BA at De Montfort University in Leicester.

With a passion for journalism, she studied a postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism at the Grimsby Institute. Having freelanced for the BBC across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire since 2005, she co-presented Break-in Britain in 2015 and is now co-presenter of the popular Countryfile Diaries.

Keeley Emma Donovan (born 14 May 1983) is an English journalist and broadcaster, working for the BBC as a weather presenter for television and radio stations in the North of England.

Early life

Donovan was born in Grimsby in Lincolnshire (then part of Humberside) and grew up in nearby Tetney. Her father, Terry Donovan, was from Liverpool and played professional football for Grimsby Town, Aston Villa, Burnley, Rotherham United,[1] and the Republic of Ireland. Her Irish grandfather, Don Donovan, played for both Grimsby Town and the Republic of Ireland.[2] He managed Boston United from 1965 to 1969.

She attended the Humberston School.[3] She took a course in media at Franklin Sixth Form College in Grimsby, then studied for a BA at De Montfort University in Leicester. She returned to Grimsby to do a post-graduate NVQ Diploma in Broadcast Journalism at Grimsby Institute of Further & Higher Education in conjunction with East Coast Media.[4]

She started her broadcast career at just 14 years old, when she began presenting for a cable TV station in her hometown of Grimsby. After finishing her studies at The Humberston School, Keeley went on to study media at college and university while continuing to present on a freelance basis.

After graduating from Leicester De Montfort, Keeley returned to Grimsby to complete a post graduate course in Journalism.

Keeley has worked for the BBC since 2005 and is already a familiar face to audiences across BBC Yorkshire, East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire as one of the region’s main weather presenters.

Having long had an interest in the weather Keeley was overjoyed when a position was advertised to join the Yorkshire weather team. She has since spent time studying with the Met Office, at the BBC Weather Centre and has also completed further studies in Meteorology with the Open University.

Keeley also presents news bulletins along with regularly reporting for the region's current affairs programme Inside Out.
