IranArt : As we commemorate the 85th anniversary of the birth of Sadegh Tabrizi, we reflect on the remarkable life and enduring legacy of this pioneering figure in Iranian art. Sadegh Tabrizi born on the 22th of February (1939- 2017) left an indelible mark on the art world as a painter, calligrapher, and visionary artist.

Tabrizi emerged as a central figure in the Saqqakhaneh movement, a groundbreaking artistic movement that blended traditional Iranian art forms with modernist sensibilities. His works represent a fusion of calligraphic mastery, elements of Iranian architecture, and motifs drawn from traditional Persian art, including Qajar art and coffeehouse painting.

From his early days in Tehran, Tabrizi demonstrated a keen artistic talent, studying miniature painting at the School of Art and later delving into the technique of painting on ceramics and pottery. Upon graduating from three years of high school in miniature painting, and after employment in the ceramic workshop of the Administrative Office of Fine Arts in 1959, Sadegh Tabrizi chose to practice painting on pottery. This novel experience gave him an opportunity to work with glaze and fire. Unpredictable happenings and interactions were the most enjoyable moments in that work. The year 1959 was a very fateful year for Tabrizi’s artistic endeavors. While preparing inscriptions for a mosque, a tile worker by the name of Sanaee made Tabrizi realize how beautiful inscriptions were, and tempted him to make a free composition with letters and words. The result of this temptation was a ceramic panel (70 x 70 cm) that yielded a new composition in white and azure, the colors of inscriptions in mosques. A pioneer of Iranian modern art, Sadegh Tabrizi’s work is characterised by his use of traditional Iranian forms and motifs including calligraphy, architectural elements, metal work, talismanic shirts, coffee house murals, Persian miniatures and Qajar painting.

 

After studying miniature painting at secondary school, Tabrizi worked in the ceramic workshop of the Administrative Office of Fine Arts. Graduating from the newly formed College of Decorative Arts in, he continued his studies with an MA in interior design.

 

As a member of the neo-traditional Saqqakhaneh movement, Tabrizi’s work exemplifies the neo-approach that the movement became known for. Experimenting with a diverse array of media including parchment and mirror mosaic, the artist was also known for his large public commissions.
