Who Was Jimmy Hoffa?
Jimmy Hoffa became a labor organizer during the 1930s. As president of the powerful Teamsters Union, he played a key role in forging the first national freight-hauling agreement for truck drivers. Hoffa was sent to prison in 1967 for jury tampering, fraud and conspiracy, though his sentence was commuted by President Richard Nixon. While seeking to regain the union presidency, Hoffa abruptly disappeared in July 1975, igniting numerous books, screen projects and conspiracy theories on the subject.
Early Life
Born on February 14, 1913, in Brazil, Indiana, Jimmy Hoffa became one of the most famous labor leaders in American history. Growing up, he saw firsthand the challenges and hardships American workers faced. His father was a coal miner who died when he was still young. His mother went to work to support Hoffa and his three siblings, eventually moving the family to Detroit.

James Riddle Hoffa was one of America’s foremost labor organizers, known for his leadership of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the corruption charges he faced, and for his mysterious disappearance. Hoffa was born into a Brazil, Indiana coal-mining family on February 14, 1913. When Hoffa was seven, his father died of work-related conditions and in 1924 the family moved to Detroit’s west side. Hoffa dropped out of school and went to work in a Kroger grocery warehouse. Spurred on perhaps by the memory of his father’s death, Hoffa rallied the workers around poor working conditions and unfair treatment, and when he called his first strike, he won.
Soon Hoffa was organizing for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which elected him president in 1957, a position he held until 1971. In 1964 he negotiated the National Master Freight Agreement, which covered over 450,000 truck drivers and was described as “a milestone for labor unions everywhere.” It was followed by similar pacts for other trades and crafts within the Teamsters union and while Ho

James Phillip Hoffa (born May 19, 1941), also known as James Hoffa Jr. or Jim Hoffa, is an American labor leader and attorney who was the tenth General President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. He is the son of Jimmy Hoffa. Hoffa was first elected in 1998, and re-elected in 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016 to five-year terms. In 2018, Hoffa was elected chair of the Road Transport Section of the International Transport Workers' Federation at its quadrennial Congress in Singapore. Hoffa is the second-longest serving General President of the Teamsters Union, after Dan Tobin, who served from 1907 to 1952. Hoffa's final term as General President ended in 2022.

Hoffa is the son of Jimmy Hoffa, who served as General President of the Teamsters from 1957 to 1971, and Josephine (née Poszywak) Hoffa. He has one sister, Judge Barbara Ann Crancer.
