Jamaican judge

Patrick Lipton Robinson (born 29 January 1944) is a Jamaican jurist who was a judge of the International Court of Justice from February 2015 to 2024. Prior to this he was formerly the President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, a position he held between 2008 and 2011[2] during which time his Chef de Cabinet was Gabrielle Louise McIntyre. He was first elected to the Tribunal in 1998 and has been re-elected twice since. In 2004, he presided over the trial of Slobodan Milošević, the former Yugoslav president.

He was educated at Jamaica College, University of the West Indies (BA, 1964), the University of London (LLB, 1968) and King's College London (LLM, 1972). He is the recipient of the national award, Order of Jamaica, awarded by the government of Jamaica for services to International Law and Honorary Doctorate Degrees from the University of the West Indies, Jamaica, and the Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis. Judge Carmel Agius is the Tribunal’s current President, elected to this position by his fellow Judges on 21 October 2015. He served as Vice-President from 2011 through 2015 and is also an Appeals Chamber judge of both the Tribunal and the ICTR. He was first elected to the Tribunal in 2001 and re-elected in 2004. Between 2003 and 2010, he was Presiding Judge of Trial Chamber II of the Tribunal during which time he presided over the Brđanin, the Orić and the multi-accused Popović trials. He was also engaged in the initial appearance and pre-trial preparation and disposal of several other cases.

Patrick Lipton Robinson (29 January 1944 - ) is a Jamaican lawyer. After graduating in 1964 with a B.A. Degree (UCWI-London) in English, Latin and Economics, Judge Robinson was a Graduate Teacher of English in Jamaica from 1964-1966. Following his call to the Bar in 1968, Judge Robinson began a long and distinguished career in public service, working for the Jamaican government for over three decades. His long-standing experience in United Nations affairs dates back to 1972, when he became Jamaica’s Representative to the Sixth (Legal) Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, a position that he held for 26 years. Judge Robinson was elected a Judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in 1998 and served as the Tribunal’s President from 2008 to 2011.
