British politician (born 1969)
Edward Samuel Miliband (born 24 December 1969) is a British politician who has served as Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero since July 2024.[2] He has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Doncaster North since 2005. Miliband was Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition from 2010 to 2015. Alongside his brother, David Miliband, he served in the Cabinet from 2007 to 2010 under Prime Minister Gordon Brown.[3]
Miliband was born in the Fitzrovia district of Central London to Marion Kozak and Ralph Miliband, Polish Jewish immigrants. His father was a Marxist intellectual and native of Brussels who fled Belgium during the Second World War. He graduated from Corpus Christi College, Oxford and later from the London School of Economics. Miliband became first a television journalist, then a Labour Party researcher and a visiting scholar at Harvard University, before rising to become one of Chancellor Gordon Brown's confidants and chairman of HM Treasury's Council of Economic Advisers. But there was also internal Labour criticism that he lacked the leadership skills to take the party back into power and that his focus on issues such as zero-hours contracts and taxing the rich was too narrow. He was not reaching out to the middle-income, southern England voters Tony Blair had gathered up to win three general elections.
There were some unforced errors, such as forgetting to mention the deficit in his 2014 party conference speech and having to apologise for a grinning snap of him promoting the Sun newspaper.
But he has endured the most sustained campaign of press criticism levelled at a Labour leader since the days of Neil Kinnock.
Mr Miliband has made much of the way that he has stood up to vested interests - starting with Rupert Murdoch, over phone hacking, and then the energy companies, when he announced a planned price freeze.
But his personal poll ratings have been among the lowest of any Labour leader, well below that of the party itself.

Ed Miliband was appointed Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero on 5 July 2024. He was elected MP for Doncaster North in May 2005.
Education
Ed holds a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University and an MSc in Economics from the London School of Economics.
Political career
Ed previously served as Minister for the Cabinet Office in 2007 and then as Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change from 2008 to 2010. In this role, he oversaw the introduction of the world leading Climate Change Act 2008 which made the UK the first country in the world to put climate targets into law.
Ed served in the Shadow Cabinet in a number of positions, including:
- Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Net Zero, 2021 to 2024
- Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, 2020 to 2021
He was Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition from 2010 to 2015.
