Mike Duncan, the creator of Revolutions– a political history podcast – had the following thought-provoking answers to my questions. Enjoy!
1) What made you want to start podcasting?
I got into podcasting after a couple of things happened at once: 1) I discovered history podcasting back in 2007 and started devouring every show I could find 2) I was simultaneously reading a ton of old Roman history just for fun (Polybius, Livy, Tacitus et al) 3) I went looking for the “Roman History Podcast” which I thought must exist and discovered that it did not. So I decided to take what I was reading and translate it into a podcast: “I’ll narrate the entire Roman Empire from beginning to end. Easy.” I have no idea why I thought I could pull it off.
I released my first episode of The History of Rome way back in July 2007. At the time I thought I was *late* to the party because there was already a pretty rich history podcasting community out there. I figured podcasting was going to be a fad that came and went, but instead it just kept getting more and m

Mike Duncan (podcaster)
American historian and podcaster
Michael William Duncan (born February 14, 1980) is an American political history podcaster and author. A self-described "complete history geek",[2] after not finding any Roman history podcasts in 2007, Duncan began The History of Rome, a narrative podcast chronicling events from the founding of Rome until the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. The podcast concluded in 2012. A year later he began Revolutions, which ran for ten seasons over the course of nine years, covering the American, French, and Russian revolutions, among others. The series' second phase ended in July 2022 and was followed by a nearly two-year hiatus before the series returned on 22 October 2024 with a fictional account of a prospective Martian Revolution.[3] On 16 December 2024, Duncan announced that he was continuing work on the Revolutions podcast, declaring that the Martian Revolution season would be the "intermission" of the podcast and that he would return to telling the stories of real revolutions afterwards.[ Mike Duncan is one of the foremost history podcasters in the world. His award winning series "The History of Rome" chronologically narrated the entire history of the Roman Empire over 189 weekly episodes. Running from 2007-2012, "The History of Rome" has generated more than 65 million downloads and remains one of the most popular history podcasts on the internet. The enduring popularity of "The History of Rome" earned it aniTunes Best of 2015 award and forms the basis for his forthcoming book “The Storm Before The Storm: The Beginning of the End of the Roman Republic” (Public Affairs Press). Duncan has continued this success with his ongoing series "Revolutions" — which so far has explored the English, American, French, and Haitian Revolutions. Since debuting in September 2013, "Revolutions" has generated more than 18 million downloads. Thanks to the worldwide popularity of his podcasts, Duncan has led fans on a number of sold-out guided tours of Italy, England and France to visit historic sites from Ancient Rome to the French Revo
