Greetings! My name is Mark A. Garlick, and I am a freelance illustrator, author and computer animator based in Hove, GB.As an artist I specialise in earth sciences, technology, astronomy, space and science fiction, but my writing focuses mainly on astronomy.
Like many artists I began my career by getting dirty with tubes of paint, and occasionally I do still work with traditional media such as acrylic or oil pastels. But these days I am primarily a digital artist. For most of my career I have used Windows. Photoshop was always my main tool, alongside 3D software such as Blender and 3DS Max. The latter I use for animations, alongside (until recently) Adobe After Effects to work on them in post-production. However, I have now switched to Linux. Photoshop works poorly on Linux, while After Effects and 3ds Max don't work at all. So I am using GIMP for stills now, Blender exclusively for 3D, and DaVinchi Resolve for video editing. I also have a YouTube channel.

My name is Mark A. Garlick, and I am a freelance illustrator, author and computer animator based in Hove, GB. I have a Bachelor’s degree in astronomy from University College London (UCL), and a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the Mullard Space Science Laboratory (MSSL), which is a department of UCL. In 1993, having successfully completed my doctorate, I secured a research post in theoretical astronomy at the University of Sussex, in Brighton (UK). But I've moved on since then. And never looked back.
While working in academia, I had done a few astronomical paintings in my spare time for fun. Around 1995, I began to write popular science articles for magazines such as Astronomy Nowand Modern Astronomer. Having amassed by now a fair number of acrylic paintings, I was often able to back up my articles with space paintings I had already done. Gradually th
