MarEngr. Md. Humayun Kabir, a distinguished graduate of Bangladesh Marine Academy, Chattogram (26th Batch, 1991), took command of Bangladesh Marine Academy, Sylhet, in August 2023. His journey in maritime education, coupled with extensive sea experience, speaks of a deep commitment to maritime excellence and education.


Md. Humayun Kabir’s academic foundation began in Noakhali, where he completed his S.S.C. at Noakhali Zilla School in 1987, followed by his H.S.C. from Noakhali Government College in 1989. After graduating from the Marine Academy in Chattogram, he embarked on a remarkable 17-year seafaring career, working with leading product and chemical tanker companies worldwide. His last seafaring position was with ASP Ship Management Pvt. Ltd., based in Singapore and Australia, where he served with integrity and skill, building a sterling reputation.

Humayun Kabir was an influential Indian educationist and politician. He dedicated his life to the field of education, contributing significantly to its development in India. After completing his education at Exeter College, Oxford, where he actively participated in various student activities, Kabir returned to India and became a lecturer at Andhra University. He later held several important positions, including Joint Education Adviser, Education Secretary, and Chairman of the University Grants Commission in Delhi. Kabir's commitment to education led to his appointment as the Minister of Education under the Prime Ministerships of Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Humayun Kabir (1906-1969) was an Indian educationist and politician. He was also a poet, essayist and novelist in the Bengali-language. He was also a renowned political thinker. He was educated at Exeter College, Oxford and graduated in 1931. Kabir had been heavily involved with the Oxford Union during his student days, having been elected secretary in 1930 and librarian in 1931. He made his farewell speech on the motion: 'This House condemns the Indian policy of His Majesty's Government'. Kabir had also been involved with the student newspapers, the Isis and the Cherwell, and the Oxford Majlis journal, Bharat. Upon his return to India, Kabir taught at a number of universities. He also became involved in trade union politics and was elected to the Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1937. He took up a number of government posts after 1947, including Minister for Education.
