Who Was Chris Kelly?

After being discovered in 1990, Chris "Mac Daddy" Kelly and his friend, Chris Smith, became the rap duo Kris Kross. The duo became known for wearing their clothes backward and for their popular 1992 song, "Jump." Kelly was only 34 years old when he died on May 1, 2013, in Atlanta. The cause of death was suspected to be a drug overdose.

Early Life

Chris Kelly was born on August 11, 1978, in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1990, producer Jermaine Dupri discovered Kelly and his friend, Chris Smith, in Atlanta's Greenbriar Mall. Although Dupri was still a teenager himself, he saw something in the young duo and wanted to work with them. With Dupri, Kelly and Smith produced a demo tape that led to them signing with Ruffhouse Records.

An Irish artist, animator and filmmaker Kris Kelly is the cofounder of Blacknorth, an award winning animation and visual effects studio. His work centres on the interpretation of emotion and creativity in digital media, intersecting new and old media and techniques to create a dense visual language. Since 2009, he has been making original films and digital media, including games and apps. Blacknorth’s short film, Here to Fall has earned a number of awards including BAFTA nomination in 2012. Kris Kelly has been commissioned to create several projects for Children’s BBC Comic Relief and My Autism and Me (2011) won 2013 International Emmy, and Living with Alcohol (2010) received a BAFTA for Best Factual.

Chris D. Kelly – Biography

In January 2011 Chris took the principled decision to vote against the Government on a European matter. Following a one-on-one meeting with then Prime Minister David Cameron in the Chief Whip’s office in the House of Commons, Chris informed the PM directly that he would still be voting against the Government on principle. The briefing to a Sunday newspaper which followed, alleging that Chris had been ‘reduced to tears’ by the PM, is categoricallyuntrue.

In July 2011 Chris publicly expressed security concerns about Huawei’s involvement in providing hardware for UK critical communications infrastructure. Today he supports the important work of the China Research Group (CRG).

In October 2011 Chris was one of 81 MPs from the (then) governing Conservative Party to join the largest rebellion of the post-war era up to that point by voting in the Commons for an in-out EU referendum, a rebellion which sowed the seeds of the 2016 referendum.
