IEC chair Pansy Tlakula resigns

Pansy Tlakula has handed in her resignation to President Jacob Zuma as chair of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), after over a year of fighting to clear her name over a botched leasing deal.

“The process of trying to clear my name has been long drawn out and for the sake of the institution I have decided to abandon this process and resign to enable the Commission to focus on the preparations for the 2016 local government elections,” Tlakula said in a statement on Tuesday evening. 

“I wish to reiterate that I have not been involved in any corruption or benefitted personally or financially from the  Riverside Office Park transaction.”

In a long-ranging interview with the Mail & Guardian on Tuesday morning, Tlakula said she handed in her resignation on Monday.

Advocate Faith Dikeledi Pansy Tlakula popularly known as Pansy Tlakula is the Chairperson of the Information Regulator of South Africa. She was born in Mafikeng and got married at Waterval township, Elim in Limpopo. Her husband's family, the Tlakulas, are a powerful ruling class at Elim. They own Elim Mall and the surrounding lands at Elim CBD. Hakamela Tlakula, the grandfather of Advocate Tlakula's husband, is the brain behind the establishment of Elim Hospital and was a leading figure of the Swiss Mission Church at Elim.

Life

Tlakula was born on 18 December 1957. She studied law at the University of the Witwatersrand before completing her master's degree at Harvard.[1] She has a master in law and has headed different influential positions.[2]

On 2 September 2014, Advocate Pansy Tlakula announced her resignation as Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). She submitted her letter of resignation to President Jacob Zuma. She was appointed the IEC’s Chairperson in 2001. In August 2013, Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, found that Tlakula had flouted procurement regulations in securing a R320-million lease for the IEC’s head office in Centurion, Pretoria, and had an “unmanaged conflict of interest” as a result of a separate and undisclosed business relationship with business associate, Thaba Mufamadi. A forensic investigation by the National Treasury made similar findings. It found that Tlakula had not given guidance or formally informed various people what was expected of them in the process.
