ONE of the most controversial radio talk -how hosts, businessman George “Umbala” Joseph, has died.

Umbala, who was the recipient of the Humming Bird Medal, Gold, died at the Port of Spain General Hospital on Saturday. He had been ailing for some time.

Former colleague at I95.5 FM and former labour minister Jennifer Baptiste-Primus said she was shocked to learn of his death, as they had a conversation two weeks ago, “and he was his natural, rude old self.”

She said he invited her  and her husband, Gaston, to dinner, but they never got to take up the offer.

Recalling their friendship, which dated back many years, Baptiste-Primus said, “George was one person who never put water in his mouth to speak. He always called a spade a spade, but he was a man with a big, big heart.

With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of veteran radio broadcaster George Umbala Joseph. The Grenadian-born Joseph made his home in Trinidad and was well known for his bluntness during his tenure at i95.5fm. Joseph was 85. Joseph is said to have contacted another medium expressing his dissatisfaction with the treatment he received whilst seeking medical attention at St James Medical Facility. Umbala said that his complaint had nothing to do with him requesting special treatment but rather for the authorities to remedy this situation in the best interest of the populace. Reports indicate that Joseph was warded in a tent with rather unsanitary portable toilet facilities which he couldn't use due to his mobility issues. The CEO of NWRHA, Anthony Blake said that the facility's structure wasn't designed for the parallel health care system and as a result the open tents were outfitted with beds since it is mandatory for patients to do Covid tests before being admitted. Joseph was moved to an enclosed area before passing away this morning. It was later revealed that his Covid test

The 84-year-old was admitted to the St James Medical Complex on Tuesday and had spent three days under a tent on the hospital’s compound along the Western Main Road before being warded.

Joseph reportedly reached out to a fellow media practitioner at Guardian Media for help to highlight his plight as he continued to be subjected to the heat; fumes from passing vehicles; and the portable toilet which he was unable to use due to his limited mobility.

At the time, Joseph said he had been forced to relieve himself behind the tent.

Contacted on Friday, Joseph said, “I’m not complaining because I’m not expected to be treated better or different. I am complaining because that is what people have to go through. If you saw the filthy condition, it will appal you as it does me.”
