John Huston Finley
American journalist and academic (1863–1940)
John Huston Finley (October 19, 1863 – March 7, 1940) was Professor of Polities at Princeton University from 1900 to 1903, and President of the City College of New York from 1903 until 1913, when he was appointed President of the University of the State of New York and Commissioner of Education of the State of New York.[1] A promenade along the western bank of the East River between 63rd Street and 125th Street in Manhattan was named the John Finley Walk in 1940 because he had often walked the perimeter of Manhattan.
Biography
He was born on October 19, 1863, in Grand Ridge, Illinois, the oldest son of James Gibson Finley and Lydia Margaret McCombs. His father and mother went out as early settlers on the prairies from the East. His father was the great-grandson of the Reverend James Finley, the first minister, it is believed, to settle permanently beyond the Allegheny Mountains in Western Pennsylvania, and brother of Dr. Samuel Finley, President of the College of New Jersey (now Prin

Born in Rockbridge County, Virginia on January 11, 1797, he came to Indiana in 1821 and served in various public offices for the rest of his life, beginning in 1822 when he became Justice of the Peace. He represented Wayne County in the State Legislature from 1828 to 1831, and for three years after that was the Enrolling Clerk of the Senate. From 1833 to 1837 he owned and edited the Richmond Palladium. In 1837 he was elected Clerk of the Wayne County Courts for a seven year term. In 1852 he was elected Richmond's second mayor, and he held that position until his death on December 23, 1866.
Finley was also a poet who is credited with the first literary use of the word "Hoosier" in his poem titled The Hoosier's Nest.
He had five children: two sons, William, who died in 1846 at age 19, and John H., who was a major in the 69th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. John Finley (born May 6, 1945 in Toronto, Ontario) is a Canadian singer/songwriter who came to prominence with Toronto R&B band Jon and Lee & The Checkmates and later with the Elektra supergroup Rhinoceros.
Finley's talents reach over many genres, including R&B, Gospel, Jazz and Rock, and is acclaimed for his song writing, recording and live performances. After Rhinoceros, Finley was a member of Blackstone before engaging in projects with Homestead and Michael Quatro. More recently, Finley has worked with the reformed band The Checkmates, and a contemporary jazz and R&B group, SoulBop!. He currently leads his own band in Toronto, Ontario and released “Soul Singer” in 2020.
