Back in college, a good decade before I became interested in photography, I would cut out photos I liked from Rolling Stone, Spin, Premiere (RIP), not to emulate, but just because I thought they were fantastic. At the time I paid little attention to who took what, but in looking back, so many of those images were taken by Chris Buck. A true master of the portrait, he excels not just in capturing something authentic and interesting about his subjects, but about creating a space around them that is equally as fascinating. He’s one of the few photographers of his generation still pushing his craft, looking for places to improve, places to explore.

It was a true honor getting to speak with him.

You’ve been shooting professionally, successfully, for a very long time now. What kind of shoots are you looking for to keep you excited? Do you need to seek those out?

Chris Buck (born July 29, 1964) is a New York-based photographer known for his unconventional portraits.

Early life and career

Buck grew up in the Toronto suburb of Etobicoke where his father, George Buck worked for Kodak Canada, giving him an early connection to photography.[1] He attended Ryerson University where he majored in Photographic Arts. During this time he was a photo editor for Nerve, a Toronto monthly music paper, released 3 compilation cassettes of original music with Canadian and American bands with Materials + Processes, and briefly managed experimental rock group Violence & The Sacred.[2][3] Buck studied at Ryerson under noted street photographer Dave Heath and media critic Murray Pomerance, both of whom continued as mentors in the years after his graduation. He moved to New York in 1990 and has since shot many important magazine and advertising photographs.

Chris Buck is a blues rock guitarist and songwriter from Newport, South Wales. He started playing guitar at the age of 13. He is best known for his 'pick and fingers' technique and as the winner of Music Radar's prestigious Best New Guitarist award in 2017.

In 2012, Chris was invited to perform at the NIA in Birmingham with Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, who called Chris a “great guitarist”. The following year, Chris released his debut album, Postcard From Capricornus, on the American label Tru-B-Dor Records under the moniker Chris Buck & The Big Horns. Chris now plays with the British blues rock band Buck & Evans, who released their debut album in October 2018 following a successful PledgeMusic campaign to fund the recording.

Chris writes a monthly column for Guitar Interactive Magazine, revolving around his famous plucking technique, where he alternates between fingering and more traditional plucking.
