The Empty Throne

2014 historical novel by Bernard Cornwell

The Empty Throne is the eighth historical novel in The Saxon Stories series by Bernard Cornwell, first published in October 2014. It is set in 10th-century Mercia and Dyfed.

Plot summary

In 911 AD, Uhtred of Bebbanburg's son, also named Uhtred, ambushes a small band of Norse raiders in the north of Mercia and brings the captives and plunder to Aethelflaed, who instructs him to take them to Gloucester, where the Mercian Witan is about to convene.

Aethelred, the King of the Mercians and estranged husband of Aethelflaed, is dying after being wounded in a battle at Teotanheale. The Witan is to decide Aethelred's successor, a difficult task as there is no obvious candidate. Eardwulf, whose sister is Aethelred's lover, commands Aethelred's household warriors and is a contender. Another is Edward, King of Wessex, but the Mercians do not wish to be ruled by a foreign king. Uhtred of Bebbanburg, who is seriously, perhaps fatally wounded, knows that Aethelflaed is the best choice, but the Witan will not choose

The Last Kingdom: 5 Times Aethelflaed Saved Uhtred (& 5 Times Uhtred Saved Her)

The forbidden love between Aethelflaed (Millie Brady) and Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) was the biggest attraction in The Last Kingdom, as it brought lots of hope for a peaceful ending to the Dane-Saxon war. Uhtred, a Saxon raised in a Dane family, is the bridge between two cultures that need to find common ground for there to be a last kingdom. However, the idea of Danes and Saxons living as neighbors and not enemies is an elusive one, and only Uhtred and Aethelflaed seem to have the solution to this problem.

Fighting for the last kingdom also means getting uncomfortably close to death, and Aethelflaed and Uhtred would both be dead by now if they weren't there for each other. The two had to abandon their short-lived love affair for Aethelflaed to become the queen of Mercia, but these moments of Aetheflaed saving Uhtred and vice versa can't be forgotten.

The Last Kingdom summary: what's the story?

This tale plays out from the perspective of Uhtred of Bebbanburg, a man born a Saxon and raised a Dane, grappling with his persistently split loyalties between his oaths (of which he makes many), his conflicting cultural identities, and his quest for retribution.

What starts out as a tale of straightforward revenge – reclaiming his ancestral home in Northumbria from his usurping uncle and avenging the murder of his adoptive Viking father – rapidly extends into a history-adjacent Vikings versus Anglo-Saxons epic, as Uhtred finds himself in the Kingdom of Wessex, where Alfred the Great has dreams of expelling the northmen from all the realms of 'England' and creating a single nation, something that wouldn't be achieved until the reign of his grandson.

The show is based on the Saxon Stories novels of Bernard Cornwell (now renamed as the The Last Kingdom series owing to the show’s success). The final, 13th – War Lord – was published in October 2020.
