Japanese judoka and mixed martial arts fighter
Yoshihiro Akiyama (Japanese: 秋山 成勲, born July 29, 1975), also known as Choo Sung-hoon (추성훈) and by his nickname Sexyama, is a Japanese mixed martial artist and judoka who won the gold medal at the 2001 Asian Championships for South Korea and for Japan at the 2002 Asian Games. He is the former K-1 HERO's Light Heavyweight Grand Prix Tournament Champion.
Judo career
Before his professional mixed martial arts career, Akiyama was a decorated Judoka.[2] He began training in Judo at the age of three. He has also trained karate, boxing, kickboxing, wrestling and also submission wrestling with Greg Jackson.
2001 Asian championships
Representing South Korea, Choo won the gold medal at the 2001 Asian Judo Championships.
2002 Asian Games
Representing Japan, Akiyama won the gold medal at the 2002 Asian Games defeating Ahn Dong-Jin of South Korea in the finals.

Yoshihiro Akiyama a.k.a. Choo Sung-Hoon in both Korean and Japan, is a fourth-generation Korean-Japanese MMA (Mixed Martial Artist), television celebrity and actor in both South Korea and his home country of Japan. Born to Korean-Japanese "zainichi" parents in Osaka, Japan in 1975, he was raised in the traditional martial arts from the age of 3 as his father was a judo instructor and his mother was a champion swimmer. His paternal great-grandfather, Choo Jeong-Won, was originally from Jeju County, on Jeju Island, now known as Jeju City.
During the Japanese Occupation of Korea (1910-45), his paternal great-grandfather, Choo Jeong-Won, and his family emigrated to Japan, and became permanent residents in the city of Osaka while maintaining their Korean citizenship and names. Choo, was born in Osaka in 1975, and starting from the age of three, began training in the martial arts under his father's tutelage, who himself was a Judo Champion too. SINGAPORE – At 47, professional mixed martial arts athlete Choo Sung-hoon, also known by his Japanese name Yoshihiro Akiyama, is the oldest fighter on One Championship’s roster.
But that is not enough.
The Korean-Japanese – who is also known as Sexyama – wants to have a fight when he is 50, which would make him among the few to do so in One Championship history. The star of Netflix’s hit South Korean competitive reality series Physical: 100 (2023) was in town recently to open the Zentosa LiveWell Festival, which is on till July 9.
At an interviewwith The Straits Times at One Championship’s headquarters in Singapore, he says through an interpreter: “At my age, retirement is a word that floats around, even in my own head. But I want to have a match and compete when I turn 50 because that hasn’t been done at One Championship, and I want to create that piece of legacy and history in my own way.”
And when he eventually retires, he hopes his final match can be held either in his home country South Korea or Singapore, the home of One Championship.
