William Kipchirchir Samoei Arap RutoCGH (born 21 January 1967) is a Kenyan politician who is the fifth and current president of Kenya since 13 September 2022. Prior to becoming president, he served as the first elected deputy president of Kenya from 2013 to 2022.[1][2][3][4] He previously served in three cabinetportfolios as the Minister for Home Affairs, the Minister of Agriculture and as Minister for Higher Education.
Ruto was elected Member of Parliament for Eldoret North constituency from 1997 to 2007 under the KANU, and from 2007 to 2013 through the ODM party. He was the Minister for Home Affairs in the Daniel arap Moi administration from August to December 2002.
Under the Mwai Kibaki administration, he was the Minister for Agriculture from 2008 to 2010 and Minister for Higher Education from April to October 2010. H.E Dr. William Ruto is a triple alumnus of the University of Nairobi. He joined UoN in 1987 and pursued a BSc. in Botany and Zoology (Chiromo Campus) graduating in 1990, he later enrolled for a MSc. in Plant Ecology, graduating in 2011. In 2012, he enrolled for a Ph.D. in Plant Ecology which he successfully completed graduating on 21st December 2018, a ceremony presided over by UoN Chancellor Dr. Vijoo Rattansi and witnessed by the 4th President of the Republic of Kenya H.E Uhuru Kenyatta among many other Kenyans from all walks of life.
H.E Ruto’s PhD thesis was titled ‘Influence of anthrologenic activities on land use/cover changes and environmental quality of Saiwa wetland watershed, in Western Kenya.’
He has also authored several papers including a paper titled ‘Biological and physico-chemical status of two wetlands in the Nairobi National Park, Kenya’ which he presented for his MSc.

William Samoei arap Ruto (born 21 December 1966) is a Kenyan politician who is the 5th President of Kenya since 2022. He was the Deputy President of Kenya from 2013 to 2022.
Before becoming Deputy President, he had many ministerial positions including the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Higher Education. He was Secretary General of KANU, the former ruling political party. Ruto was a member of Parliament for Eldoret North Constituency between December 1997 and January 2013. He won the seat in the 1997 Kenyan election after defeating Reuben Chesire.
Ruto was charged with crimes including murder by the International Criminal Court. The trial has been ongoing since 10 September 2013.[1] The charges against him were dropped in 2016 due to lack of evidence by Fatou Bensouda.
On 12 April 2022, Kenya Kwanza political coalition endorsed Ruto as its presidential candidate for 2022 elections. He would win the election with 50.5% of the vote, beating former Prime MinisterRaila Odinga in August 2022.[2]
